The title of this piece is a reference the classical theme of the Temptation of Saint Anthony; a subject that's been engaged by Michelangelo, Salvador Dali, Hieronymus Bosch and many other artists throughout the centuries. In this case the title and theme were introduced almost as an afterthought, it became meaningful as I executed the work. In classical works this subject deals with the Golden Legend of the saint's trial at the hands of demons while seeking enlightenment in the desert. As an allegory it holds a universal truth for anyone who has sought to better themselves in some way and yet found themselves at first tempted, then tormented by forces that would distract one from their personal path. In this case, temptation comes in a spiritual desert as a collective onslaught of shared grief and misery.

Reverse: Echoing the masks of Melpomene and Thalia, two moon-eyed homunculi spar with their spikey appendages. An allegorical riddle for anyone who believes such things are important.
