Writing for Film & Television

Here are the kinds of writing assignments with which I currently have professional experience.

Examples available upon request.

Outline

The genesis of any worthwhile project begins with the distillation of the major themes and structures into a clear, concise document known as the Outline. Each word is carefully chosen to craft a document that delivers the maximum impact in the fewest words.

As an initiating force of the project the outline is critically important.

Treatment

The Treatment is a detailed document that expands on the major points of the outline.

In terms of story this document outlines major aspects of structure – acts, story points, etc. – as well as points of style and driving ideas.

The treatment defines all of the major concepts of the project. It will serve as the basis for all documentation that follows. A well written treatment provides valuable insights into Production Planning, Budgeting, Production Design, Administration and Script Writing.

Series Bible

A television Series Bible is the definitive document that outlines all of the vital details required in the creation of a television series.

The creation of a series bible keeps unified direction through the life of a TV series insuring that desirable qualities are maintained through all episodes.

A Series Bible contains detailed descriptions of Characters, Setting, Background, Show Format, Production Considerations, Show Standards and Writers Guidelines. Additionally the bible may include Episode Outlines.

Script Writing

The old Hollywood studio techniques of Script Creation allow for maximum flexibility and collaboration at each step. This begins with Script Outline then goes to Script Treatment to Longform Treatment and finally to Dialogue.

This approach allows for natural evolution of characters and scenarios within their own environment. It also allows for changes later on as new forces are introduced to the project.
